One of the natural jewels of South Africa is Cape Point, 60 km's south west of Cape Town. 

The Point has always been notorious for its violent rain and wind storms and is an area which has claimed many a shipwreck. Prior to 1859, before the first lighthouse was completed, it was extremely difficult for ships to navigate their way around the Point and avoid the dangerous rocks and being washed up against the ragged cliffs.  The Lighthouse was built to assist ships to navigate their way around, and even then it was found that the signal was often blocked by bad weather.  The lighthouse was then moved after the "Lusitania" ran aground in 1911.  Ships can count on this beacon of light from 63 km's out to sea, using some 10 million candle power every 30 seconds.

To experience the spectacular view take a ride on the Funicular, and be whisked away to the site just below the lighthouse.  The Funicular leaving every three to five minutes, is made entirely from South African resources, is environmentally friendly, can accomodate wheel chairs and is a great way to get the best out of the experience.  Alternatively take a  fifteen to twenty minutes walk up to the Lighthouse, which is a great favourite with the children.

For Nature Lovers, Cape Point Nature Reserve is a must see.  This heritage site stretches 7,750 hectares and hosts an endless variety of fauna and flora.  It is home to Buck, Baboons, Cape Mountain Zebra and many more.  For bird lovers, there are more than 250 species to look out for.  The reserve boasts a unique variety of Fynbos.

For photographic enthusiasts the Reserve is an amazing place to capture a 360 degree view, more than 200 metres above sea level.  Take time to sit down, reflect and enjoy.

Enjoy a glass of wine or a seafood platter at the "Two Oceans Restaurant" and soak up the spectacular view and atmosphere.
